THE NATIONAL WOODLAND OF SAMARIA

Samaria gorge was named after the small church, which is in the gorge. Its starting point being the position Xylokastro in the central part of the White Mountains, Samaria gorge extends as far as the village Agia Roumeli on the coast of the Libyan sea in the south. It separates Selinon County from Sfakia County and covers an area of 48500 acres with many peaks over 2000m. The highest of all is Volakias. The breadth of the gorge ranges from3m to30m and its depth is 500m, while its length is 18km. The wild but picturesque scenery, filled with cypresses and pine trees, attracts many visitors, who want to admire its beauty. During the Turkish occupation many women and children took refugee in the gorge in order to save themselves from the conquerors. Throughout the entire area there are many caves such as the Daskalogianni cave, which was named after the renowned warrior Daskalogiannis. Another cave is the Demon cave, which is said to have been Apollo's oracle.
