CRETE

Crete is the biggest island of Greece. In the north it is washed by the Cretan sea and in the south it is washed by the Libyan sea.. The island has four counties: Chania, Rethimnon, Heraklion and Lasithi. Its population is 500,000 people. Most of them occupy themselves with agriculture and tourism. Olive, oranges and wine are some of the staples of the island. There are also people who earn their living with fishing and cattle breading as well. Crete has a long history, which goes back as far as the year 2000 B.C. It was during that period when the Minoan civilization developed and many cities such as Knossos, Lissos, Festos, Aptera and Eleftheria enjoyed great prosperity. The biggest mountains of the island are the range of the White Mountains located in Chania and Psiloritis Mountain located in the center of the island. Many distinguished personalities come from Crete: Vitsentzos Cornaros, who wrote the poem “Erotokritos”, the renown painter El Greco, Eleftherios and Sofoklis Venizelos, great political figures of Greece and the famous writer, Nikos Kazantzakis.
